A brown living room rug can highlight your room’s decor by contributing to the room’s color scheme, style, and tone. By connecting your rug to the other wall art, poufs, pillows, and miscellaneous decor through these three areas, you create simple connections that make the room feel cohesive and intentionally designed.
Brown is a popular color in a variety of interior design styles, and so you’ll find that there are hundreds of options for different patterns and color schemes within your search for brown living room rugs. Even brown itself can vary in tone depending on its shade and brightness, but how much or how little brown is in the rug also plays a big part in the rug’s style/tone. Whatever blend you’re looking for, there’s definitely a brown rug out there that’s just right for you.
As you look for your perfect brown living room rug, consider these primary areas to help you narrow your search.
Position: One of the first steps is to decide how you want to do your living room’s layout and how the rug fits into it.
Living Room Accent: If you’re trying to set up a small social corner or reading nook, use a small brown rug to establish that area.
Small Living Rooms: In small spaces, 5x8 and 6x9 brown rugs are often the right size to line up with a small sofa/loveseat and other seats. You can have the rug float in front of the furniture or sit under their front two legs.
Medium/Large Living Rooms: When it comes to living rooms that are a bit larger, use an 8x10 brown living room rug with your main seating area. With a rug of this size, you’ll likely have the front legs on the rug, and you may have the rug go further beneath the seats.
Large Living Rooms: Large spaces call for large rugs, and in these cases, the rug can go all the way under the furniture or even extend out from the ends of the seats. Try a 9x12, 10x14, or 12x15 rug depending on your room’s size.
Shape/Size: It’s a good idea to take out the measuring tape and space out what size rug will actually fit your room best, but it’s also a good idea to think about the shape of the rug. Brown living room area rugs are available as rectangular, round, runner, and many other shapes. Playing with the shape is a good way to work with a uniquely shaped room or add unexpected style.
Pattern: Because brown is a popular hue in many styles, you’ll find plenty of options for different patterns and designs in living room area rugs. From the ornate patterns in oriental and persian rugs all the way to simple jute rugs that highlight texture instead of patterns, you can find rugs at the far ends of this spectrum and anywhere in between. For guidance, look at your favorite style and your other decor for similar motifs, shapes, and tone to connect the rug’s design to your other decor.
Color: There’s a lot to consider when it comes to the rug’s color, and that includes choosing what shade or brown you want in the rug. After all, each shade strikes their own tone and style. Chocolate brown strikes a very different tone than a light tan, for example. Outside of looking at the shade of brown, you also need to consider what other colors you want incorporated in the rug. Common colors include blue, red, grey, orange, and white just to name a few. To decide what colors you want, look at your other decor for guidance. The rug should have colors in the same family and convey the same tone.
