Is your room ready for a refresh? Start from the ground up! A large area rug can steal the show with a bold color or pattern, or simply provide a neutral base for a room that's already well styled. But before you commit, let us help make sure you choose the right size and material to be sure you find the perfect large rug for your home.
Choosing the right size rug for your space is important. If the rug is too small it may appear to be an afterthought or make the room look incomplete. If the rug is too large it can overwhelm the space and detract from other design elements. Here are some tips to pick the rug size that is just right for your room:
Go Big! - In a living or dining room, a large rug can make the room look complete and classic. You should allow 12"?-18"? of space between the wall and the rug and make sure all furniture pieces fit completely on the rug. 9'x12', 10'x14', and 12'x15'+ are typical sizes for these room types.
Go Big(ish) - If you're going for a simpler style, choose a smaller rug but be sure it still can fit under your seating area. Make sure the front two legs of the sofa and chairs make it onto the rug. 8'x10' and 9'x12' rugs work well for this style.
Layer it on! - One option that can be a little easier on the wallet is to layer multiple rugs. Start with a large jute or sisal rug. Place all your furniture completely on the base of the rug then top it with a more luxurious small rug centered in the seating area. The top rug is a fun place to add some color and accent to your room.
Measure it up - Measure your room and the area you'd like to cover with a rug. Put down an easy to remove tape to give a clear visual of where the rug will go and how it will look. If you're stuck between two sizes, choose the bigger size; most of us err on the side of picking a rug that is too small. A rug that's too small for the space makes the room appear disjointed and smaller.
