An oval area rug can highlight your room’s decor by reinforcing your style, furthering the color scheme, and establishing the tone of the room. Your rug should connect to your other decor through these three areas so that your room feels unified in its design. When that’s your mentality, your rug will naturally highlight your other decor as key elements of the grand design.
Oval rugs aren’t as common as rectangular or round rugs, which is why they’re a great choice for doing something different with the layout and in establishing the rug’s tone. Even though they’re not as popular as other shapes, you still have plenty of options in terms of materials, finish, pile height, pattern, color palette, and other key aspects, so you don’t have to settle for something less than perfect.

Position: One of your first steps should be to finalize your room’s layout and decide where exactly you want to place your oval rug. Each room is unique, but these general ideas will help guide you.

This is an important factor to consider along with the size of the room itself, the size of the nearby furniture, and how the rug will overlap with that furniture. Some smaller sizes were recommended above, but for larger areas, look at 4x6, 5x7, 6x9, and 8x10 rugs.
Pattern: Oval area rugs are used more commonly in some interior design styles than others, but that doesn’t mean you’re limited with patterns and designs. Options are spread out through categories like boho, oriental, moroccan, farmhouse, rustic, and other styles. There are also textured rugs like braided ones that fit into multiple styles. When you choose a pattern, be sure its style is in the same vein as the rest of the room and ties your scheme together.
Color: Your rug's color palette is also key in tying your room together. You may be tempted to just search for popular colors like black, blue, green, yellow, gold, red, pink, grey, and teal, but after looking for those specific colors, you still have to consider what shades they are and what other colors are in the rug’s design. Don’t view this as a daunting task; instead, view it as the perfect opportunity to define your room’s color scheme.
