When Is It Time To Buy A New Rug?
One obvious time to buy a new rug is when you’re changing the room’s style or color palette, but other times, you may just need a simple refresh. It’s often time to replace your rug when it's collecting stains that are becoming difficult to remove, if it’s holding odors, or if it’s seeing general wear and tear. The wear and tear can be shown in the rug becoming too flattened in certain areas, fabric pulling, or just dirt from day-to-day life.
How To Flatten a New Rug
One struggle with new rugs is to get it fully flattened. One of the key ways to get it flat is to simply give it time to settle. If that’s not enough, then there are other methods of flipping it onto the other side and allowing that to uncurl the edges/corners of the rug or back-rolling it the opposite way to work against the original rolling. Outside of those options, you can consider using a steamer, an iron, or the sun. The heat will allow the material to relax, although you need to be careful when using heat, since it may damage the rug or make colors bleed together.
Are New Rugs Toxic?
There are some rugs with materials like polypropylene, nylon, and polyester that are created through chemical processes, but that doesn’t mean that the materials themselves are toxic. The same goes for the dyes that are used in coloring different materials; there may be chemicals used, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that the rug itself is toxic. When you’re looking at new rugs, be sure to choose an established brand that cares about the materials they use, the dyes, and other key aspects of the rug.
How to get Rid of the "New Rug" Smell
The most simple way to get rid of any initial odor is to just give it time. Leaving it in a well-ventilated space will allow that smell to dissipate and disappear. Other practical ways to get rid of the smell are to turn up the heat in that room, open up your doors and windows, and vacuum the rug over the first few days (assuming that vacuuming is an approved method of cleaning for that particular rug).
Why Do New Rugs Shed?
New rugs shedding is completely normal! Sometimes, there are just a few loose fiber fragments left on the top of the rug after it’s done being manufactured. To get rid of shedding, just give it a light vacuuming or cleaning and that will typically resolve the problem.
