No matter how old your child is or how they decorate their room, a rug is such a key factor in defining the room’s style and coziness. Whether your kid is learning to crawl or doing their homework laying on their bedroom floor, a rug can serve your child practically and add in style and comfort.
Kids rugs come in such a variety of sizes, colors, and designs that you can pair your rug with just about any accessories and decor. Of course, the decorations that you use will vary depending on how old your kid is, but common accessories in children’s rooms include wall art, wall tapestries, knick-knacks, toys, books, and even more as your children get older.
Because there are so many options for kids' rugs, you may be intimidated to even start the shopping process. However, if you follow these general guidelines, you’ll be well on your way to finding the rug that perfectly suits you and your kids’ needs.
Position: There are several common ways to position a rug in a kids room. Kids area rugs may be placed completely underneath the bed, centered underneath it, or placed ? of the way underneath it. Otherwise, rugs can be placed to one side of the bed and/or centered in the middle of the room. In play rooms, you can also center it in the room or use a smaller area rug to establish a play area.
Size: Once the position of your kids rug is established, double check the size and scale of the rug. Scale is simply considering how the size of the rug pairs with the other furniture and pieces in the room to make sure that one isn’t too large or too small for the other. Fortunately, scale comes naturally to many, as you can visually see how the room balances out.
Shape: Kids area rugs come in many shapes, such as rectangular, oval, round, square. Animal skin rugs can also fit well in kids rooms (particularly nurseries and rooms for younger kids) and add in a unique shape. If you do decide to use a unique shape, reconsider the position of the rug, since an animal hide rug likely won't be placed completely under the bed or even partly underneath it.
Pattern: One of the perks of shopping through kids rugs is that there are a ton of different patterns and designs. If you want your rug to age well with your child, you can choose a rug that has a defined pattern to it versus a rug that has a design such as roads, farms, and other artwork. That being said, there’s nothing wrong with choosing a rug that paints a portrait--this is a neat way to engage your child and add cuteness to the space! Each pattern and design has its place, and no matter which way you’re stylizing the room, you can choose a rug that fits your vision for the room.
Shades/Pairings: This is yet another area where there’s a great deal of options available. You can choose rugs that have colors like pink, blue, red, yellow, and green, but depending on the brightness of those colors, the tone of the room can be either soothing and mature or bright and youthful. The amount of colors and what they’re paired with can also affect the tone of the room, so when you’re first shopping for your kids area rug, think through the mood you want to invoke and how the colors and their pairings will contribute to that mood.
