How a Country Rug Can Spruce Up Your Room Decor

A country rug can add to your room’s decor by adding in a sense of coziness and accessibility. Country style as a whole can help create spaces that are homey, comfortable, and relatable, and so choosing a rug within country style helps cultivate those types of spaces. 

Decorating with a Country Rug

Some people think of Country style as being dated, with lots of plaids, imagery with chickens and farm animals, and more stereotypical country decor. However, country style has evolved with the times to feel more modern but still retain its initial charm of being welcoming and homey. So, the accessories that you decorate with such as pillows, blankets, knick-knacks, and so on don’t have to be dated or cheesy; you can choose pieces that fit in the here and now but still fit the mood. 

Choosing Which Country Rug Is Best For You

Country rugs fit into a lot of different patterns and styles, so when you’re narrowing down your search, here are a few areas to consider. 

Position: It’s important to establish which room you want the rug in, but beyond that, you need to consider how it connects to the other furniture and fixtures in the room. 

Living Rooms: You can decorate your living room with a country rug in several ways. Some common layouts include placing the rug directly in front of the seating, in the middle of a “U” formation, underneath the front legs of the furniture, or completely underneath the furniture. 

Dining Rooms: You can place a country area rug directly beneath your dining room table, but when you do, be sure it extends enough that the chairs aren’t half on/half off the rug. If you’re creating a more traditional space, have the rug and table the same shape as one another, such as a rectangular rug with a rectangular table. 

Bedrooms: There are some common layouts for rugs in bedrooms, such as the rug being centered underneath the bed, centered under the bed but just underneath the bottom ? of the rug, or elsewhere in the room like centered in the room or off to the side in an established seating area. 

Kitchens/Bathrooms: Country rugs can be especially impactful in these spaces, since there aren’t as many chances to accessorize in these rooms. You can place a small 2x3 rug in front of sinks, or use country runners along pathways. 

Size: The size of your country rug directly connects to the placement of the rug. As an example, you’d buy a larger rug if it’s placed completely underneath the sofas, as opposed to having it lay just in front of the seating. 

Shape: Country rugs come in several different shapes, with the most common ones being rectangular or round. However, oval rugs are also very common with country rugs, especially woven or braided oval rugs. 

Pattern: Country rugs often show off woven and braided patterns, but those aren’t the only options. They can also have stripes, solid colors, plaid, checkers, and other patterns. So, there are plenty of different complexities and designs depending on what you’re looking for and whether you’re creating a modern country room or something more traditional like French country. 

Shades/Pairings: Like any other style, country rugs come in a variety of colors and vibrance. Oftentimes, the colors are a bit more muted with modern country style or richer for the more traditional country designs. Colors are also combined with others in the same brightness and richness, and it’s these pairings and hues that determine the rug’s overall mood and tone.
