Living room decor is essential for establishing your personal style and adding your personality to the room. The room size and furniture may set an overall mood, but it's the pieces you add in as living room decor that truly make the space feel unified and beautiful. 

What Living Room Decor Styles Should I Choose?

Boho - If you enjoy lots of texture, eclectic style, and natural elements, Boho is the perfect style for you. It often feels like a "collection"? of items as opposed to a matched set. Items tend to be from personal travels around the world or at least evoke that sense. There's plenty of layers and texture in Boho style that helps create a trendy, vibrant space. 

Farmhouse/ Coastal- Farmhouse decor and coastal decor aren't reserved for the farm or the beach. Both of these styles are focused on creating homey environments that are light and bright and an inviting place to rest. Both of these styles love to incorporate neutral colors for their base, and then the pops of color pop up through accessories and accents. These styles can also blend well with rustic decor, which highlights natural elements and wood tones as well. 

Modern- Modern living rooms are all about form and function. There are decorative elements in modern living rooms, but modern decor tends to be minimal with which accessories it includes and purposefully uses limited color palettes. The base palette often is black, white, and woody, but the accent colors can be any color you choose. 

Traditional/Elegant- Both traditional and elegant interior design highlight well polished spaces and create an air of reverence in the room. While traditional uses more brown tones and ornate wood carvings, elegant style will often use metals like silver and gold that are either very detailed or very simple. Living room accessories tend to elevant the space with class and detailing. 

Southwestern- Southwestern decor is inspired by the desert and is filled with earthy tones and organic materials. It's another style that loves to highlight bursts of bright, bold colors and patterns. If it uses tiles or a rug with a similar pattern, those elements are often Spanish-inspired in pattern and color.

What Accessories Should Every Living Room Have?

Fabrics- Throw pillows and blankets are not only practical, but they can also add to the room's style and color scheme. You can choose plain colors for these fabrics, or you can go bold and add in pattern and texture with them. The same goes with curtains if you choose to add them in; they can set the tone of the mood through their color and if they are thin enough to let in light or completely block it out. 

Rugs- There are so many ways to lay out rugs in living rooms, and all of them are great for establishing the room's style. Solid rugs, patterned rugs, rugs made of natural materials, or rugs that are unique shapes can help establish the room's color scheme and theme. 

Wall Art- Wall art can show off items specifically associated with your design style or add in your favorite quotes. Farmhouse, for example, tends to highlight farm animals and simple living, while modern wall art can be more abstract. Whatever your style, there are so many options out there for your living room wall decor that will fit your exact space and color scheme. 

Shelf Decor- All of these design styles can utilize shelf decor--even Modern decor, which is often known to be minimal. Common shelf decor includes plants, books, clocks, picture frames, and other knick-knacks associated with your style. These small items are the perfect living room accessories to tie it all together.

What Colors Should I Add To My Living Room?

The colors you use for your living room decor largely depend on the style you're leaning towards. Just about all of these styles can work well with neutral color bases of white, beiges, and grays, but you can also add in darker colors with modern, boho, and southwestern styles. Spaces focused on being homey tend to use more muted colors like pale blues, greens, and yellows, while the more modern styles go bold with darker tones like teal, orange, and red.
